Souvenir of Cézanne 	“Sardines”, high fashion fish…
“The Sardines” is a contemporary painting from the Fish series by Cecile Colombo.
Fish are one of the subjects of the artist’s work. In the same way that she decorates the swimsuits of her bathers with multiple colors and patterns, she deploys treasures of imagination to decorate and even dress the bodies of her fish. Collage, graphics, fancy treatment, everything contributes to make each fish unique.
In this painting, Cécile Colombo has chosen soft summer colors that give the painting a general tone of great freshness. Her usual fantasy is well present. In “Les Sardines” the fishes parade like mannequins displaying a harmonious and coherent collection. The graphics are characterized by the contrast between symmetry effects and geometric freedom. The contrast is also in the choice of colors: water and earth colors, black outlines on a pure white background.
A particularity of Cécile Colombo’s large fish paintings is that you choose the direction of the hanging, horizontal or vertical.
